Sports Report - Year 7 Rugby @ Blake

The year 7 rugby team have made it their best performance yet against a much improved Blake team. Robert Blake School played host to our year 7 team in the third of four rugby tournaments. Sadly, both BCA and Brymore pulled out of the event (probably because they heard Ollie ‘the wood chipper’ Manchip was back in action), so Blake and Chliton played an extended 32 min game made up of four 8 minute quarters.

First Quarter

Going into the game the boys were confident. This was proved true when O Manchip side stepped his way to the try line (5-0). However, the dreaded over confidence creped in and Blake took advantage of that. They broke our gain line multiple times from great rucking and some missed tackles on our part. They scored (5-5).

Second Quarter

The second quarter started very positive with rookie player E Krupovis making some impressive runs. A Higgins was there to support K Escott with some devastating lines of running leading to Ashley scoring our second (10-5). But it was short lived! Blake were back on the attack, now linking to their key runners quickly, they broke our gain line and levelled the score (10-10). Chilton were ready for pay back straight from the restart. L Redwood showed his North Petherton skills and made some great 30yrd runs from the outside centre position and ready to support was Ellis Gannicott and Ollie Manchip who slotted home our third try (15-10).

Third and Fourth Quarter.

By the start of the third quarter Chilton had stepped into top gear. A fantastic team effort in the rucks and mauls by L Sutton, M and B Bradley, D Warren, A Higgins and F Gogolin ensured Chilton winning many more breakdowns. These students are now proving to be the powerhouse of the squad and will be devastating in competitive scrummaging next year. But we can’t forget K Escott who powered through the middle of the Blake squad, besting 9 players and scoring his own try right under the nose of many of their players. Tries were coming steady in the latter stages of the game with another try from A Higgins, two more from O Manchip. D Warren was unstoppable not once but twice to score two powerful tries and FGogolin was rewarded for his efforts as well.

Final Score (Chilton 50-10 Blake)

A fantastic team effort by Chilton, but credit also to Blake for a much improved performance. Training is on next Tuesday for the entire squad in preparation for our last tournament a week after.
