Sports Report - Year 7 and 8 Girls Rugby Festival

The Year 7 and 8 Girls took part in their first ever competitive fixtures at the Somerset Schools open festival. On arrival the girls were drawn in a group with St Katherines, Backwell and Churchill A which proved to be very tight and competitive.

The girls began with a 6-2 victory over St Katherines with J Head, T Onojaife and H Mitchell showing the way with hard powerful running scoring good trys. A Charlot and E Rowland stood out with good tackling technique whilst D Chapman and P Hill supported well off the ball.

The next game saw Chilton beat Churchill A 4-0 with a brilliant defensive display against physical opposition. T Onojaife was the star scoring 3 trys with powerful runs and ball steels in the tackle. In defense A Charlot, A Griffin, T Naylor and A Pittey putting in lots of tackles.

The next game was against Backwell who had lost narrowly to Churchill A. Backwell played their strongest 10 players making no substitutions until the last minute. The game was end to end as both teams showed good running skills. In the end Backwell edged a thrilling encounter 4-3 with J Head, A Ravinska, F Hill and H Mitchell standout performers.

With 3 teams winning 2 games each in the group Chilton finished top on most trys scored leading a final against Fairlands who had scored 30 trys without reply in their group. the final saw Chilton come up against physically stronger opponents who were quick and experienced at club Rugby. the first half saw Chilton 3-0 down however the 2nd half was much closer as E Rowland, A Charlot, J Head, T Onojaife and D Chapman put in countless tackles to prevent trys. At 4-0 down Chilton broke away and a fine run by H Mitchell saw Chilton score the try of the game. Despite the 4-1 loss the girls were brilliant and enjoyed the experience.

Beth and I look forward to organising some friendly Area fixtures in the future as these girls definitely came back keener for Rugby after a lovely sunny day in Weston.
