Sports Report - Year 8 Boys Football

This afternoon saw the Year 8s entertain Haygrove in what turned out to be a thrilling encounter. With Mr Butt 'glory hunting' with the Year 7/8 girls cricket team I was trusted with the responsibility of coaching a great bunch of lads.

The game didn't start well as Haygrove scored within 2 minutes of the start. They soon bounced back though and on 10 minutes O Mountain ran onto a O Dyer through ball to take advantage of a keeping mistake to draw the scores level. The game became an end to end thriller with both teams guilty of missing chances to add to the score line. H Hambly and O Dyer began to compete in midfield whilst l Jennings and V Marsh battled manfully to contain the powerful Haygrove attack. Just before half-time Haygrove took the lead after some good wing play. Chilton looked to hit back but were unlucky not to go in level as H Hambly shot just over the bar when well placed.

The second half continued in a similar manner as both teams looked to attack at all times. O Mountain produced a magical 5 minutes of forward play as he finished well from a H Hambly pass and then he linked well with B Toogood to turn well in the box to make it 3-2 to Chilton. Chilton's lead lasted 1 minutes as Haygrove produced a fine counter-attack to draw level once again. With the game evenly balanced it could have gone either way however a cross come shot looped over T Knapp to give Haygrove the lead. Having already completed his hat-trick O Mountain nearly scored again as a shot from wide right just flashed past the post. With 2 minutes to go Haygrove looked to clear their lines and a high clearance from a defender flew with the wind and some how avoided T Knapp to make it 5-3 to the visitors. To their credit the boys didn't give up and a fine run by L Jennings saw him tripped on the edge of the box. L Jennings stepped up and smashed a shot into the roof of the net to make the final score 5-4 to Haygrove.

In a great game played in good spirit both teams deserve lots of praise. Man of the match went to O Mountain for a great debut performance showing everyone he certainly has the footballing talent in the family. Special thanks must go to his brother T Mountain who stepped up to do the line at the last minute
