Sports Report - Yr 9 Hockey

The enthusiastic yr 9 squad of hockey players faced strong opposition in the 3rd tournament of the year. This would be an important fixture and the girls knew that with a loss to KAS in the first game of the season but having won everything else, today a win was what was needed to secure a 'play off ' match to decide the Sedgemoor champions. A draw or loss would mean KAS go through!

A warm up match v guests Kings of Wessex saw Chilton A  challenged from the outset.  Alice P ,Alisha H and Ferne  H hunted down the Kings' tall and athletic key players, giving them very little time to get comfortable on the ball. The defenders of Charlotte L, jazz F and Morgan E were cleverly forcing the Kings' forwards wide of the goal area and made strong tackles to break down any attacking play. They soaked up attack after attack and still managed to get the ball into the attack forcing the Kings' goalkeeper to make good saves. In the last few minutes the Kings players capitalised on a lapse in concentration and scored . Heads went down a little but the girls would not give in and managed to attack. With all CT players trying to force the draw, Kings managed to break with 1 long hit and the last hit of the match saw Kings touch the ball into an empty goal. 0-2 loss.

The B team had also had a challenging game and lost 0-6 . Some of the girls were frustrated, wanted to make personnel changes- felt they wanted to give in , felt they were bound to lose:-(,

Others were determined to fight back and win in later games. I was proud to see that

Now Chilton A faced KAS -the crunch match. Whilst the B team faced Kings B again.

For the A team Morgan went in goal to both practise for the finals and more importantly ensure we could protect the goal against the KAS shots. She was nervous but needn't have worried. The defenders did a great job to keep the ball out of the D as much as possible and when the KAS players were able to shoot she strongly cleared the ball. CT were winning the midfield battle again but somehow an innocuous pass by a KAS forward manage to bounce its way passed the Chilton defenders and bobbled over the goal line. 1-0 down. The girls didn't panic too much and responded in the best way possible with Alice fighting from the push back and scoring immediately 1-1 and a huge cheer.  The last 5 mins were hard fought by both teams and saves from Morgan and clever stickwork from Jazz and Angeline meant the full time score was 1-1.

Unfortunately this means that KAS wil represent Sedgemoor at the Winter games.

The yr 9 do have a further challenge in the County tier 3 finals at Kings College in Dec.

The B team ran over after their Kings of Wessex game -they had lost again but were much happier with their performances-Jess Woolmington and Amy Griffen being voted as Player of the match by the Kings players.  They took this more positive frame of mind into their final game against the KAS squad. it was great to see all players linking well to get shots on the keeper and a well fought midfield battle. Tiffany O , Charlotte H, Lucy and Amy were key in defence, Jess , Jenny , Chloe did not stop running. The girls finished 1-0 down,  the A team lost to Kings of Wessex B too , Tiff was voted player of the game and of course the bus was filled with the sounds of Christmas Karaoke all the way home. !

A brilliant set of  girls ..keep training !
