Sports Report - Yr7 Girls Hockey

On Tuesday the undefeated year 7 girls hockey team travelled to Millfield for the Winter Games county finals, and ‘winter’ it certainly was. Arriving to frozen pitches didn’t stop the eagerness of the the girls as they jumped straight out of the bus keen to go for a run around.

The first of three matches against a very strong Sexeys school meant that the girls quickly realised that the competition here was considerably stronger than what they had faced previously. With Ava in goal for the first time ever, she certainly had plenty to keep her busy! An early goal gave the opposition a boost of confidence, yet our girls were determined to fight back. Some fantastic saves and even a dive save from Ava, kept our spirits high temporarily with a 2-0 score at half time.  Unfortunately a quick goal in the second half by the opposition meant that Chilton heads dropped, followed by a series of impressive attacks at our goal and a number of successful shots to follow. Final score, 7-0.

Next up we played Castle. With an early injury for Keira, things weren’t looking great, but the girls ploughed on and battled hard, keeping the opposition away from our D for a while. With a lot of dynamic running in to spaces, Jess proved her worth with some beautiful options for passing to. Unfortunately her runs amounted to very little as we struggled to get the ball past the half way line. Again Ava made some fantastic saves and cleared the ball beautifully on occasions, but the opposition did manage to place a few pass her.

Our last match was against Fairlands. Some strong defending my Alyssia, alongside Maddie marking her player out of the game gave us hope, yet the opposition managed to fight through and score a few early goals. We didn’t stop fighting, and worked hard in our half of the pitch to keep the ball away as much as possible. A few more goals took the score to 4-0 at half time. The second half proved to be a constant battle of more defending, yet a quick break from Paige and Mia, playing some excellent two touch hockey up the pitch, passed 3 defenders and the keeper, gave all of us a boost of confidence. Final score 5-1
