Introduction

All students in Yr10 & 11 will study core ICT for one hour per week to develop their ICT skills for use both in school and the outside world.  Students will study for the AQA GCSE ICT (Short Course), which is equivalent to ½ a GCSE.

Qualification available:   Short course GCSE (equivalent to half a GCSE at grades A*-G)

Course content

All students will learn how to use ICT systems to:

  • Present information
  • Handle information
  • Understand functions and forms of software and hardware
  • Plan and develop ICT based solutions

The courses will:

  • Be relevant to the students own lives and experience
  • Develop specific ICT skills which can be used in school, the home as well as industry and commerce
  • Keep the students careers options open

How students will learn

All lessons take place in one of our ICT suites.  The students have to work independently to complete a series of tasks, building on ICT skills from Key Stage 3.  They will need to analyse information in order to solve a series of ‘problems’ using the most appropriate software solutions.  Each problem needs the student to design ‘draft’ ideas, improve and develop them to provide suitable solutions.  This is followed by testing that their solution works and finally evaluating what they have done to suggest improvements for the future.

How students will be assessed

GCSE short course has a ‘Board Set Assignment’, which is internally assessed and worth 60% of the final grade and an externally set end of course exam worth the other 40%.

Additional Information

Students gaining GCSE short course in ICT will have access to a range of career and further education opportunities.  They will learn and use a variety of skills throughout the course including; collecting, analysing and interpreting data, communicating your findings in different ways, and identifying and developing links between different parts of the subject.  These basic skills are in great demand by Colleges and Employers.
