Europe storms into Bridgwater!

Students at Chilton Trinity Technology College enjoyed celebrating the European Day of Languages on Wednesday September 26th 2007, as the school participated in a  variety of events to raise the profile of European customs, events and languages.  Throughout the day staff wore lapel badges depicting a European flags and phrases, which students had to interpret and discover the country of origin as a competition.  Students also engaged in a series of fact-finding missions about European languages which culminated in the production of a magazine and web page, to be added  Information quiz sheets and posters around the school reminded students that in their future twenty first century lives, English will not be the only language they will need. (In the UK alone we now use over 300 different languages.)  The day included a special foreign language themed school menu, provide by in-house Millennium Caterers.

Chilton’s head of modern foreign languages, Paul Morgan remarked “It’s really important for young people today to fully appreciate the impact globalisation is having on their lives.  Most people imagine for example that ‘everybody else’ speaks English, when in fact the language spoken by most people as their first language is Chinese!” When asked which language he thought people should learn, Mr Morgan wisely replied

“The most useful language to learn is actually any language!  The whole experience,       whether undertaken as a student or an adult is not only challenging, but also           extremely rewarding, not to say extremely useful of course!”
