Parents study hard too!
Back

A group of six parents who have children attending Chilton Trinity Technology College have just proven that in spite of the old adage, “you can teach an old dog new tricks!”

A year ago Chilton Trinity Technology College started a "One Step Ahead" class for parents of Year 9 students who wanted to take a science GCSE before their children encountered the examination. This wasn’t just one-upmanship: they wanted to experience the course for themselves and thereby enhance the support they were able to give to their own student learners.

Having worked in classes every Tuesday after school for the last year, they were all rewarded this summer with GCSE success. Paul Cadmore, Director of Specialism at the school and course organiser was very impressed with their results:

“At the end of the course the parents gained grades ranging from A* to C; a fine achievement when juggling jobs and being a parent, with academic study.”

The course will be running again this year, in addition to a second course for GCSE Mathematics and the school hope that more adults from the local community will be interested enough to have a go at some fun learning whilst achieving a national qualification.

The school are also interested to hear from adults and families who might like to participate in a “Dab and Daub Community Art Workshop.” With painting or ceramic modelling on offer, the limited number of places are expected to be quickly snapped up.

For more information about any of these opportunities, please contact the Extended School Coordinator, Mr Allan Blake at the school or on 01278 410089
