Year 7 students at Chilton Trinity Technology College began their new term with a flying start as the “Red Rubber Band” Theatre Company presented “Moving Up” to the Year Group. With a minimalist range of props and audience participation, the cast of three deftly presented various scenarios depicting what can be the emotional worries students feel as they “move up” to a new school. With follow-up workshops, students had an opportunity to enact and discuss a variety of themes with each other, as they began the process of developing new friendship groups. Student Support Coordinator, Tim Williams was very enthusiastic about this opportunity for students to experience live theatre in such an intimate and relevant context: “We place significant importance on ensuring that our new students feel confident, secure and supported as they begin their new school, and this has really helped to show that it is actually quite normal to feel a little nervous, yet at the same time, know that there are lots of support mechanisms in place to help you.” Red Rubber Band Theatre Company are based at the Bridgwater Arts Centre, and Director Charlie Deardon described their work as “An exciting way to introduce new pupils to the issues around moving schools”. The event was funded via a grant from County Councillor Ann Bown, which was distributed via the Sedgmoor Learning Alliance. |
