Fortunately, only small scale models were the source of much discussion and interest, when on Monday 1st March, 50 Year 9 students competed in an Engineering Challenge at Chilton Trinity Technology College. The activity was delivered by The Smallpeice Foundation and involved students designing, making and then testing a wind turbine from very limited materials. The students all showed great ingenuity in both their structure and generation technique. Each team were judged on various criteria covering economics, aesthetics and efficiency. The winning design generated over 1.5v and had an innovative gearing system to maximise the efficiency of the turbine. The six winning students have now gained a place on a specialist engineering conference at Cirencester Agricultural college aimed at not only giving a further insight into engineering but also a chance to experience higher education. Chilton Trinity Technology College continue their engineering theme with a free exciting, interactive lecture “A Rough Guide To Engineering” delivered by the team from Science Made Simple on 16th March at 6.30 – 7.30, which is open to all members of the public.
