DEAR – Drop Everything and Read

UNDER REVIEW

DEAR is our whole-school reading programme that aims to achieve the following:

  1. Develop fluency leading to enhanced comprehension
  2. Instil a love of reading
There are four 30 minute DEAR sessions, Monday-Thursday that alternate with lunch, depending on year group.

DEAR 1 (12:55 – 1:25)

DEAR 2 (1:35 – 2:05)

Yrs 8 and 10

Yrs7, 9, 11

The format of DEAR is as follows:

  • Two sessions of tutors reading the same book aloud, modelling fluency and the metacognition of reading. Tutors are to ask questions to check for comprehension and inference.
  • Two sessions of students silent reading their own chosen books and the tutor listens to individuals read.

Rationale

If a child can read fluently, working memory is freed up for comprehension.  This will benefit them throughout their school-life and beyond.

Modelling reading fluency is crucial so that students learn the various techniques.

Fluency includes accuracy, automaticity and prosody.

During silent independent reading, students can put these techniques into practice and can read to their tutor on a one-to-one basis.

If a tutor is concerned about a child’s reading progress, they are to alert the SEND team.

DEAR Texts

The titles for each year group are below.  They are read on rotation.  The librarian, Ceri Foster, will inform you of your reading order. Books are to be collected and returned to the library.  Please give enough notice to Ceri that you are nearing the end of a book so that she can prepare the next set.
