Intent

Developing confident and curious language learners

  • To build confidence in our students’ ability to write in the TL on a range of topics and to speak on a range of topics, embedding phonics to support their speech and to build up their confidence and embedding key verbs/grammar to support them across sub-themes of learning
  • To develop language learners that are curious about the culture of other countries and the world around them
  • To build resilience and confidence in understanding language, giving students the resilience to tackle text with unrecognised language
  • To embed and revisit grammar and high frequency vocabulary in a spiral curriculum – revisiting key words and phrases multiple times in units, terms and years

Unit 1 – Introductions, phonics, sounds, understand how to tackle 4 language skills – listening, reading, speaking, writing, my life and all about me – name, age, birthday, where you live, describing my personality and others; Assessment – Knowledge test and Listening

Unit 2 – All about me continued – pets, describing a photo – speaking and writing skills, present tense key irregular verbs, Assessment – Knowledge test and Speaking

Unit 3 – My free time – I play, I do, key irregular present tense verbs, sports and hobbies; assessment – Knowledge test and Reading

Unit 4 – Free time – I play, I do, key irregular present tense verbs, sports and hobbies what is in your town;– assessment – Knowledge test and Writing

Unit 1 – My life and technology – recapping free time, talking about what you use your phone for, sports and hobbies, present tense, past tense (‘I’ form) and what you did yesterday, using two tenses together; assessment - Knowledge test and Reading

Unit 2 – Describing holiday activities, what you can do on holiday, using three tenses in the ‘I’ form – past, present and future, cultural learning about Spanish cities such as Barcelona, giving opinions: assessment – Knowledge Test, Listening and Writing

Unit 3 – Film study – Valentin – looking at types of films, opinions, cultural study of Argentina, describing others, using the past tense to describe a scene in the film; assessment – Knowledge Test and Writing

Unit 4 – What we do in town – arranging to go out, making excuses, discussing getting ready to go out, talking about clothes, watching a Spanish short-film aimed at teenagers about getting ready for a party; assessment – Knowledge test and Reading

Unit 5 – Healthy living – saying what food you like, using negatives, ordering a meal, talking about diet and lifestyle/ daily routine; assessment – Knowledge Test and Speaking and Translation/Reading

Unit 6 – Young people in the world and the environment – talking about children’s lives and their rights around the world, including how they get to school, nationalities, using the comparative, discussing environmental issues and world issues, using the future and present tenses (1st and 2nd person); assessment – Knowledge Test and Reading and Listening (end of year)

Unit 1 – Introductions – to be able to say your name, age, birthday and pets, phonics, sounds – assessment: Speaking

Unit 2 – All about me – free time, physical description, what you’re like – assessment: Listening

Unit 3 – school – subjects, differences between France and England, opinions, timings of the day, food at school; assessment – Reading

Unit 4 – free time, what you do online, activities you play/do; assessment – Writing

Unit 5 – In my town – describing what is in your town, what you do in your town and what you can do, opinions, phonics, where you go, phonics; assessment – Writing

Unit 6 – Holidays – describing when and where people go, ordering at a beach café, present and future tenses; assessment – Reading

Year 8

Unit 1 – discuss what you do on your computer/ mobile phone, using the regular present tense with -er verbs, discuss which sports you play depending on the weather using jouer and faire, giving opinions and saying what you like to do in your free time, describe what other people do; assessment – Knowledge test and Reading and Translation

Unit 2 – Les Choristes – French film study – boarding school for boys in late 1940s France – giving opinions on different film genres, describing the characters in the film, introduction to the topic of school, learning subjects and opinions, comparing Chilton Trinity to the school in the film, comparing school rules, using the future tense to predict the ending of the film, film review; assessment – Knowledge test and Writing

Unit 3 – Paris, culture, about the city – describing what there is in your town and what you can do, expressing your opinions, using 2 tenses – discussing what you did in town last weekend, where you go on holiday and what you did on holiday; assessment – Knowledge test and Speaking

Unit 4 – Paris, culture, about the city – saying what you can do in Paris, looking at famous tourist sites, what you like to do with your friends, discussing a recent trip to Paris, discussing where you would like to visit and why, revising 3 tenses – past, present and conditional (I would like…), how they celebrate Easter in Paris and across France; assessment – Knowledge test and Listening

Unit 5 – My identity – talking about what your family and friends are like, talk about what you do with your friends depending on the weather, talking about the type of music you like, what clothes you wear, using the past tense to talk about what you wore, and future tense to talk about what you are going to do and wear next weekend; assessment – Knowledge test and Reading (using 3 tenses)

Unit 6 – Where I live – describing where you live, home and town, using prepositions, talking about meals and buying food, looking at carnival in France (culture); assessment – Knowledge test and Listening

Year 9

Unit 1 – Me and my life – describing your personality, talking about yourself and others, talking about the sports you like doing depending on the weather, what you watch on TV and the music you listen to; assessment – Knowledge test and Writing

Unit 2 – Paris, culture, about the city – describing what there is in your town and what you can do, expressing your opinions, using 2 tenses – discussing what you did in town last weekend, where you go on holiday and what you did on holiday; assessment – Knowledge test and Speaking

Year 10

Unit 1 – Holidays – say where you go, how you got there, where you stayed, accommodation, speaking and writing practice, past, present and future tenses; assessment – Writing

Unit 2 – Describing a holiday home, using the comparative, asking for directions, describing what you can do on holiday, use three tenses together to write a presentation; assessment – Speaking (role-play)

Unit 3 – Family relationships and technology – saying what you use your phone for and social media, what type of music you like, saying what you did yesterday, describing people, extending responses, talking about reading preferences, describing relationships; assessment – Knowledge test and Reading paper

Unit 4 – Jobs and future plans – talking about what you would like to do in the future, different jobs, skills, what they involve, what you did at work yesterday, talking about languages and travel, using three tenses, work experience and part-time jobs and chores; assessment – Speaking

Unit 5 – An adventure in Madrid – Meeting and greeting people, describing a day trip out, buying souvenirs, discussing a trip to Madrid, strategies for Reading aloud and Reading skills; assessment – Listening and Reading

Unit 2 – Revising family and describing people, talking about what makes a good friend and family relationships, making arrangements to go out, describing a night out using the perfect tense, talking about your life when you were younger using the imperfect tense, discussing role models and people you admire using all 3 tenses (present and 2x past tenses); assessment – Writing

Unit 3 – Jobs and future plans – talking about what you would like to do in the future, different jobs, skills, what they involve, what you did at work yesterday, talking about languages and travel, using three tenses, work experience and part-time jobs and chores: assessment – Speaking

Unit 4 – Festivals and culture – revise food and drink, talking about shopping for a special meal, using the present and near future tenses, describing festivals and traditions in France, research a French festival, recap daily routine, clothes and colours, discussing family celebrations; assessment – Listening and Reading
